Female Dog Names

By Anna Lynn Sibal

What should you name your dog if she is a girl? You would be surprised at the naming conventions that some dog owners have adopted with regards their female dogs. There are dog owners who do give a lot of thought as to what name they would assign to their female dogs, while some just tag them with the first name they come up with.

A common practice among some dog owners is to give their dogs masculine names even if they are obviously female. These masculine names, when given to female dogs, usually refer to the female dog’s abilities and characteristics. It is not really surprising to find a female dog that has the name Hunter or Ranger because she is good at hunting, at flushing out prey and at scouting her owner’s territory.

Poker might be a name that a female dog might possess, which might in turn indicate that she loves to poke her nose and paws anywhere, usually where they do not belong. Of course, if a dog is named Poker, it could also be because her owner loves playing the card game, enough to name his dog after the game.

While there are men who are quite indiscriminate when it comes to female dog names, there are some male dog owners who tag their dogs, both male and female, with feminine names. Often these feminine names that these men assign to their dogs are the names of their former girlfriends or their mothers. This is most especially true among men who are very close to their lady dogs.

Regardless of what naming conventions some dog owners may have when it comes to naming their female dogs, the fact is that most female dogs are named according to their physical appearance. It is not uncommon to find a girl dog named Lovely or Jewel because she is quite a beautiful dog. Neither is it uncommon to encounter girl dogs that are named Blanche because of their white coat, Sienna because of their brown coat, or Ebony because of their black coat. Female golden retrievers with unimaginative owners are sometimes named Goldie or Golda, for obvious reasons.

Some owners of female dogs do look beyond their appearance when choosing a name and opt to give her a name that reflects her characteristics and personality. Bubbles is a common cutesy name for a female dog that is exuberant and playful. Female dogs that are drama queens are often given names like Garbo. Lulu is a popular name for lazy female dogs.

If you have a girl puppy and you want to choose the right name for her, be assured that you can name her anything that you fancy. However, you do need to be careful in picking out her name. You should avoid naming her after a living relative or friend, unless you are sure that she would not be offended in discovering that you named your girl pooch after her. Also, you had better not give in to the temptation of naming your girl dog with something lovely but too long or too hard to pronounce. Such names would be too difficult for you to say and too difficult for your dog to remember.
